The 20 Retail Companies With the Most Stores in America
See which retail companies have the most stores in America, led by Dollar General, plus the largest U.S. chains in pharmacy, grocery and more.

America’s biggest retailers are not always the companies with the biggest physical footprints. When ranked by the number of U.S. retail locations, discount chains, pharmacies and auto-parts stores dominate the list. Dollar General stands far above the competition with more than 20,000 locations nationwide, while Dollar Tree, Walgreens and CVS also maintain enormous store networks.
The ranking reveals just how different store count can be from overall company size. Walmart, one of the largest retailers in the world by revenue, ranks much lower by U.S. location count than many people might expect. Walmart and Sam’s Club together operate just over 5,200 U.S. locations, putting the company behind several chains with much smaller stores.
Auto-parts retailers are another surprise. AutoZone and O’Reilly Automotive each operate more than 6,000 U.S. stores, giving both companies a larger domestic footprint than Walmart and Sam’s Club combined.
Dollar General Has the Largest Retail Footprint
Dollar General leads the ranking by a wide margin, with roughly 20,942 U.S. stores based on the company’s latest reported figures. Its massive footprint reflects a strategy built around relatively small stores serving suburban, rural and smaller-town markets.
That model allows Dollar General to operate in communities that may not support a large supermarket or big-box retailer. Dollar Tree follows with approximately 9,000 U.S. locations, while Walgreens and CVS remain among the most widespread pharmacy retailers in the country.
Grocery, Discount and Specialty Retailers Fill Out the List
The top 20 also includes familiar names such as Kroger, ALDI, Target, Home Depot, Ross Stores, Five Below and Bath & Body Works.
Several companies operate under multiple retail brands. TJX Companies, for example, includes TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Homesense and Sierra, while Albertsons operates numerous grocery banners across the United States.
The result is a retail landscape where the companies with the most locations are often those built around smaller, repeatable store formats rather than enormous individual stores.

What Counts as a Store?
For this ranking, the focus is on company-operated physical retail locations in the United States. Restaurants, banks and gas-only locations are excluded, and independently owned franchise or cooperative locations are not counted where they would make the comparison inconsistent.
Store counts are based on the latest available company filings, annual reports and investor disclosures, so reporting dates vary slightly by retailer. The infographic above shows how America’s largest retail footprints compare — and highlights just how widespread some of the country’s most familiar chains have become.
