America builds hundreds of thousands of new homes every year, but a surprisingly large share comes from a relatively small group of companies.

At the very top of the industry, two builders operate on a scale that is difficult for almost anyone else to match. D.R. Horton and Lennar each closed more than 80,000 homes in 2025, putting them far ahead of every other major U.S. homebuilder.

The gap becomes obvious almost immediately. PulteGroup, the third-largest builder in America, closed fewer than 30,000 homes during the year.

Using the latest Builder 100 rankings from *Builder Magazine*, here are the companies building — and closing — the most homes in America.

## D.R. Horton Is Still America's Largest Homebuilder

D.R. Horton remained the largest homebuilder in the United States in 2025, with 87,168 home closings in the Builder 100 rankings.

That works out to an average of nearly 239 closings every day of the year.

Founded in 1978, D.R. Horton has expanded across markets throughout the country and built much of its enormous scale around homes aimed at entry-level, move-up and active-adult buyers.

Its size is especially apparent when compared with most of the industry. D.R. Horton alone closed almost three times as many homes as third-place PulteGroup.

## Lennar Is Almost as Large

Lennar was not far behind.

The Miami-based homebuilder recorded 82,583 closings in 2025, putting it within roughly 4,600 homes of D.R. Horton.

Lennar also generated more homebuilding revenue than any other company on the list, at approximately $32.1 billion.

Together, Lennar and D.R. Horton closed **169,751 homes in a single year**.

That means the two largest builders accounted for about 46% of all closings generated by the top 20 companies on this list.

## Then Comes a Huge Drop

Perhaps the most interesting part of the ranking is what happens after the top two.

PulteGroup sits comfortably in third place with 29,572 closings, followed by NVR at 21,915.

Those are enormous businesses by almost any measure, but they still operate at a fraction of the volume of D.R. Horton and Lennar.

The combined scale of the top five builders is even more striking. D.R. Horton, Lennar, PulteGroup, NVR and Meritage Homes collectively closed approximately **236,000 homes in 2025**.

## America's Top Homebuilders Are Getting Enormous

The modern U.S. housing market has increasingly favored large builders with access to land, financing and national purchasing power.

Large builders can often acquire land years in advance, negotiate bulk pricing for materials and maintain extensive networks of contractors and suppliers. They can also offer mortgage-rate incentives and other buyer promotions that may be harder for smaller builders to match.

Those advantages have helped national homebuilders expand their share of new-home construction, particularly as existing-home inventory has remained constrained in many parts of the country.

For buyers searching for newly built homes, that means names such as D.R. Horton, Lennar, PulteGroup and NVR are becoming increasingly common across major U.S. housing markets.

## Toll Brothers Shows Why Unit Volume Isn't Everything

One company illustrates why home closings do not tell the entire story.

Toll Brothers ranked ninth by total closings, with 11,292 homes, but generated approximately $10.84 billion in homebuilding revenue.

That put its revenue near NVR's despite closing roughly half as many homes.

The reason is largely Toll Brothers' focus on luxury and higher-priced housing.

It is a reminder that two companies can build very different businesses even when both are considered among America's largest homebuilders.

## More Than 10,000 Homes a Year Is Still an Exclusive Club

Only 11 companies in the Builder 100 rankings surpassed 10,000 home closings in 2025.

The group included:

D.R. Horton, Lennar, PulteGroup, NVR, Meritage Homes, Taylor Morrison, KB Home, Sekisui House U.S., Toll Brothers, Century Communities and Ashton Woods Homes.

Clayton Properties Group narrowly missed the mark with 9,953 closings.

That means even among America's biggest homebuilders, reaching five figures in annual home deliveries remains relatively uncommon.

## The Top 20 Builders Closed Nearly 368,000 Homes

Add together the companies on this list and the scale becomes remarkable.

The 20 largest builders recorded approximately **367,900 home closings in 2025**.

The top 10 alone accounted for nearly 296,000.

And more than half of the top-20 total came from just D.R. Horton, Lennar and PulteGroup.

| Builder Group | Combined 2025 Closings |
| -------------------- | ---------------------- |
| D.R. Horton + Lennar | 169,751 |
| Top 3 Builders | 199,323 |
| Top 5 Builders | 236,264 |
| Top 10 Builders | 295,959 |
| Top 20 Builders | 367,897 |

The numbers reveal a homebuilding industry that becomes dramatically more concentrated near the top.

## What Does “Home Closings” Mean?

There is an important distinction in how these numbers should be interpreted.

The Builder 100 ranks companies using annual **home closings**, meaning homes that were completed and delivered or closed to buyers during the reporting period.

That is not necessarily identical to the number of homes physically started or constructed during the same calendar year.

Different companies also operate on different fiscal calendars, which can make direct comparisons using individual corporate annual reports more difficult.

Using the Builder 100 closing figures provides a standardized way to compare the largest homebuilders across the industry.

## America's Homebuilding Giants

Thousands of builders operate throughout the United States, ranging from small local contractors to regional developers.

But at the top of the market, the scale is increasingly extraordinary.

A company closing 5,000 homes in a year is already among the largest builders in America. Closing 20,000 puts a company among an extremely small group.

D.R. Horton and Lennar operate on another level entirely.

Together, they closed nearly **170,000 homes in 2025**, showing just how much of America's new-home market can now be influenced by a handful of enormous national builders.

And for anyone wondering who is building the most new homes in America, the answer is increasingly clear: D.R. Horton and Lennar are in a league of their own.
